IS IT RIGHT FOR ME?
There are a lot of things that can cause the shape and position of the breast to change over time and affect the fullness and firmness of the breast: Pregnancy, breast feeding or simply the natural process of aging. A breast lift (mastopexy) can both raise the breast and shape it to achieve a more youthful look. It can also address other concerns such as downward pointing nipples or breast that hang below the breast crease.
Schedule a free consultation with Dr. Griner to discuss your goals, questions and concerns with regards to a breast lift.
ABOUT THE PROCEDURE
There are several different techniques used for breast lifts. Dr. Griner will visit with you to discuss which approach will be best for you. Regardless of the technique it’s Dr. Griner’s goal to make the scarring as minimal and inconspicuous as possible. Although it is impossible to perform a breast lift with no scars, for most women the scarring is acceptable as they are hidden along the natural breast contours and over time will fade to your regular skin color.
WHAT TO EXPECT
You’ll be provided a set of pre-operative instructions describing how you should prepare for surgery. This will cover things like activities, foods and medications to avoid prior to surgery. It’s important that you familiarize yourself with and follow those instructions. It’s also important to arrange for a responsible adult to be available to take you home after the surgery and stay with you the first night if necessary.
Day of Surgery
You’ll meet with Dr. Griner and the anesthesiologist prior to surgery. This is a good chance for any last minute questions. The actual surgery typically takes less than 3 hours. Afterwards you’ll be moved into your recovery room which will typically last 1 to 1 1/2 hours before you’ll be discharged.
After surgery you’ll need to restrict certain activities that involve heavy lifting or vigorous arm movements for up to 4 weeks. Most women return to work approximately 10 – 14 days after surgery. You’ll be provided with a detailed list activities to avoid and things to be aware of post surgery.
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
HOW DOES A BREAST LIFT SURGERY DIFFER FROM GETTING BREAST IMPLANTS?
A breast lift primarily focuses on improving the appearance of the breasts, usually by lifting and reshaping them. Breast implants only add volume to the breasts but do not change the actual placement of the breast on your body. A breast lift procedure will help enhance and improve the appearance of your figure without requiring artificial breast implants.
SHOULD I CONSIDER GETTING BREAST AUGMENTATION WITH MY BREAST LIFT?
While the breast lift procedure won’t increase the size of your breasts, a lot of women have been very happy with the results of a breast lift alone. Their natural breast tissue is lifted and reshaped, resulting in a younger, and much more appealing look. However, if you think a breast augmentation is also an option for you, understand that both procedures can be done in the same surgery.
WHAT QUESTIONS SHOULD I ASK MY DOCTOR BEFORE A BREAST LIFT?
You first need to set a goal for yourself relating to the size and shape that you would want. You can then discuss that with Dr. Griner and get his opinion on whether your goal is reasonably achievable. In a free consultation Dr. Griner can answer a lot of questions that you might not even know you have right now.
WHAT CAN I EXPECT DURING THE RECOVERY PERIOD?
A feeling of soreness comes first, which is usually accompanied by swelling. Discomfort in the first few days is a given, but this will vary depending on the type of incisions used in the procedure and whether or not a breast augmentation was included in the breast lift surgery. You’ll need to avoid anything involving heavy lifting or vigorous movements for up to 4 weeks. In most cases, women are able to return to work after a week or two.
